Got to the woods this morning and was listening at 5:40. Wasn’t there 5 minutes heard this bird bust off, wasn’t real sure where he was, so I didn’t move, 5 minutes later he busted off again. So I set out headed his way, wasn’t a real good way to get above him in the tree so I set up below him, he gobbled about 40 times in the tree, finally pitches down about 6:30. Hits the ground gobbling, I did a fly down cackle and and some yelping. He is fired up and hammering at every noise I make. But he won’t come down the hill. So I manage to crawl away from him and circle up the hill since he’s on the ground. I get about 50 yards from where I need to be and start crawling again. I get re positioned and yelp from my mouth call. He hammers twice, he 75 yards from me down the hill, it’s somewhat think pines where I’m at and will have to pick a shot. So I yelp and cut one time. He double gobbles again, he coming, or I thought so anyway. 10 minutes go by and I’m not sure where he went. So I cluck and purr at him, he’s 40 yards from me! I can hear his chest rattle when he gobbles!!! So I’m all kind of tore up and shaking now!! I need to turn to my right to shoot, so I slowly get shifted around, after I got turned I scratch the ground a little and yelp a few times. He hits it again, by this time I see him coming, I have one shooting lane to kill him in. Luckily he is headed towards it, I’m taking full strut!! He gets in the opening and he’s blowed up, I cut on the mouth call with my gun shouldered and bead on him. When I cut on the call he gobbled and I let him have that 3.5 hevi shot! Busted his ass dead! Biggest bird I ever killed, and the first one I ever killed on my own from start to finish. He had 1 3/8” spur, 11” beard and weighed 22 lbs on the dot. Still pumped about it. Gonna eat fine!! Them Gentleman Jack Game Calls are where it’s at.
