Under my skin
I hate to get hung up on an old hard headed gobbler but it has happened. You cant call to him or he'll shut up and leave the area. Never roost in the same place. You know its him.when he gobbles cause its deep and long. Almost sounds like a double gobble but if you listen close its just one real long gobble. Ive been trying to kill.him for about 3 years now and he always does the unexpected.
I had him at 80.yards last week off the roost coming to me slowly and a deer screwed that up. Then today he split away from 2 other gobblers and i heard him gobble towards the back fence. So i concentrated on the 2 other gobblers and moved toward them. They were about 100 yards and gobbling. I wanted to close the distance some and move to a bigger tree so i got on one knee to.get ready to move about 20 yards. Thats when i heard a deep putt behind me. I turned and saw it was the old gobbler sneaking up the hill behind me. He had doubled back on me! Godamighty!!! That SOB's days are numbered. Im going to full sneak mode and i aint ashamed to say it. Sometimes you got to do things that others would frown on. I did learn one thing today. He responds somewhat to leaf scratching so ill be scratching and slipping on him from now on!
He will be a good one i know!

Re: Under my skin
Yep I’ve had this to happen by not just one bird but two old timers that stay together all season
I know many haven’t heard of gobblers staying together like this
I’ve hunted these bird into my third season now
They’ll both gobble and start coming in when one of them will shut up and circle around while the other is gobbling his head off
With out fail that joker that goes silent will slip around and fins me every time
I’ve tried every trick in the book
Keep calling
Call once
Call while backing away from them
Decoys
No decoys
All different types of call and different calling styles
Always hidden good and that bastard manages to find me
I’ve named them Heckle & Jekyll
Happened once this season already

Man what some hooks. I hope you can slip up on him and hook him up DL. Birds seem slick this year, no patterning around my place.

Re: Under my skin
If you know the sound of his gobbles- Will he gobble at fly-up time? If you know where he's roosted get within 100 yards or less of him well before daylight. Don't use a hen call on him but rather a course gobbler yelp very sparingly & scratch the leaves with a stick to hide your movement around fly-down time. I did this one time back in the 90's & it worked on a SOB of a bird. Basically using a fall technique for old gobblers in the spring.

Re: Under my skin
Im.tired of huntin this turkey. Im taking tomorrow off. LOL
I was so close to him yesterday morning, bout 75 yards, i heard him when he hit the ground and his goozle rattled a little. He must have exhaled some when he landed. Hard headed rascal only gobbled 1 time this morning and that was it.
I had hogs mess me up a couple of times too. It will drive a man to drank!
That is all.

Sometimes you just have to go AT&T on them and reach out and touch him.
I would walk over a naked woman to get to a gobbling turkey. Ben Rodgers lee
