Ive got a M77 308 top tang. When I first got it, I discovered a serious safety problem. When the safety was shifted off it would randomly fire. Not every time, but occasionally. It was enough to make me scared of it, even though I always point my guns in a safe direction. I took it to a qualified gunsmith who determined that some jackleg had attempted to lighten the trigger pull and ruined the safety mechanism. So we put a brand new trigger group in and solved the problem.
Lesson is, if you don't know what you're doing, don't screw with a rifle trigger.
