Trail Cam Bucks

I am not gonna bog the site down with too many pics.....because I have hundreds of these deer!
But, these are the 3 bucks that I was referencing in the Camera Census post.
It took a while to unravel the key to killing each of them. And, a lot of careful camera re-postioning.....often unsuccessfully! But, it sure was sweet when each of them came together!

1st one was a wide 8pt.
He laid up on Sanctuary property and I eventually found where he was swimming the oxbow to stage on what we called the Island.

#2 was a true OLD warrior!
He also bedded on a Sanctuary and visited too eat and look for does.
It took me 3 years to finally get a shot at him....and he was pushing a group of does along the edge of the lake toward a food plot when I did. He was almost totally nocturnal and a real challenge!

And then, #3 was the 10pt from this year.
He lived in a VERY small area!!! He was probably only 35-40 yds from where I found his sheds when I shot him! And, THAT is what made him hard to kill. He bedded just off the edge of the large ag field and could monitor all traffic in/out of his area. The pines are so thick in the area now, about 7 yr old clearcut, that they are virtually unhuntable....and definitely impossible to enter without alerting other deer and spooking them. I got some daytime pics of him, and even saw him once or twice. I finally realized what the common thread was; when I saw him, the wind was causing me to come in from a different, longer route and walk a long ways. And, if nobody had been there in a day or two, I would get his pic in shooting light. I knew that he was on to us and 'knew' when someone was in the area. I waited on the right wind and walked a long ways in early in the afternoon, about 2:30. I slipped through a little trail I had cut through the pines and eased into the blind as quietly as possible. Sure enough, just before sunset, he came in driving a young buck away from a doe.

Good job. Definitely some big deer around Carlton.

Thats awesome. I can tell you put in alot of time studying those deer and it paid off.

I thought about another VERY important detail or two that are often overlooked and added them.
2 of the hunts involved boat/trolling motor and the other a long walk to get to my stands.

I would like to think that it could help some people.
I am amazed at how many times people tell me that they have found a 'beautiful' spot for a stand. I get it.....they can just picture a HUGE buck working a scrape there, or munching on non-existent acorns, or chasing a doe through the wide open woods...... BUT, there is NO sign there that indicates that those scenarios are very likely. Hunt DEER; not pretty places!!!

Think about that one and try to use it! :)

I've seen several places South of the big gate below Carlton that my pirogue would come in handy. However, I've seen some alligators that were as long as my pirogue, too. :P

I was going to ask you in my post above about the wind and how often does it affect what and where you decide to hunt.

I have grown to enjoy patterning a big buck as much as I do actually hunting and killing them. They are amazing animals!!!
I am often surprised that small, maybe 50 yard moves of a camera will result in NO pictures of a buck.....even though you KNOW he lives there and frequents the area! They normally stay within well-defined specific areas and trails. And, another thing I have noticed is........not everybody can find and get pics of mature bucks; even on the exact same property! You cannot randomly place a camera and expect to get mature buck pictures. They do not just wander around blindly.
